Baker School System Transforms Benefits Administration with Benefitfocus Technology

Wright & Percy Insurance Helps Clients Simplify Benefits Enrollment and Administration
CHARLESTON, S.C. & BAKER, La., Dec. 9, 2010 /PRNewswire/ — Benefitfocus today announced that the City of Baker School System (Baker Schools), a Wright & Percy Insurance client, has successfully implemented the Benefitfocus Platform and HR InTouch Application for automated benefits administration and enrollment. Wright & Percy, a division of BancorpSouth Insurance Services, Inc., recently introduced Benefitfocus HR InTouch to many of its clients in the state of Louisiana. Baker Schools was the first Wright & Percy client to implement HR InTouch, which has transformed the school system’s administrative processes and simplified enrollment for all of its employees.

Prior to using HR InTouch, Baker Schools had a completely paper-based benefits administration system, which proved to be time-consuming for employees and HR administrators alike. The process was so cumbersome that Wright & Percy functioned as the school district’s back-up office for all HR-related tasks.

Benefitfocus HR InTouch, privately labeled “N-Roll” for Wright & Percy Insurance, provides a Web-based portal for benefits management and enrollment. Baker Schools’ HR staff can administer their entire benefits program through HR InTouch. Because employee benefits data is stored electronically within the application, Baker Schools has been able to minimize coverage errors and create more efficient reconciliation processes with its insurance carriers. Significant cost savings continue to be realized by Baker Schools as they have automated paper-based systems and data integration with insurance carriers. For the complete story, click here

Is Wage and Hour “friending” your Employees?

Ignorance is NOT bliss when it comes to Wage and Hour – Protect yourself by being an informed Employer.

The triple threat of the (1)Wage and Hour Division’s (WHD) newly created Attorney Referral System (2) the hiring of 350 more Wage and Hour investigators and (3) the WHD’s “campaign” to reach out to employees coupled with the exorbitant amount of legal jargon that a HR executive must learn to protect the employer makes me shake in my stilettos in fear for employers just struggling to keep the lights on!

(1) Every year, the WHD must turn down thousands of FMLA and FLSA claims (it’s no wonder when they get 35,000 employment related cases per year) because of limited capacity. Up until now, these workers were told that they had every right to pursue the case through their personal legal counsel. Starting December 13, 2010, the WHD will now connect these workers to a local referral service that will, in turn, provide the worker with access to Attorneys.

(2) As part of the most recent stimulus package, the WHD added 350 more investigators. The thought is, with more investigators, more employers will be audited.

(3)The WHD’s “We Can Help” campaign was launched in the spring with a series of public service announcements (posters, billboards, radio, TV, etc) instructing employees on how to document their employers pay practices and bring it to the DOL for review.

COME ON, Employers! See the writing on the wall and don’t assume that it won’t be you. It appears that the WHD takes the stance that most employers do not care to abide by the law. As a result, you see resources being directed to “catching employers” who in most cases do not even know that they’re in violation because of the sheer complexity of the law. Well….I think most employers (there’s obviously exceptions) actually have good intentions. Employers Beware!
